Lemon presided over CNN’s live coverage of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan, the Arab Spring, the killing of Osama Bin Laden, and the tornado that hit Joplin.

In the days preceding the 2008 presidential election, Lemon further reported from Chicago. He had an interview with then-Rep. Rahm Emanuel on the day that he accepted the post of Chief of Staff for President-elect Barack Obama.

After seeing Lemon’s interview with Cooper on CNN, President-elect Obama spoke highly of the 106-year-old voter, Anne Cooper, in his election-night acceptance address.

His most well-known breaking news stories include the collapse of the Minneapolis bridge in 2007, Hurricane Gustav in Louisiana in 2008, and the deaths of Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson at the inauguration of the 44th President in Washington, D.C.

The shootings at the Colorado theatre and Sandy Hook Elementary School both occurred in 2012. He provided coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing, the Philadelphia building collapse, and the George Zimmerman trial in 2013.

He also covered breaking news from other years, such as the shooting deaths of Freddie Gray while in police custody in 2014, Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager, in Ferguson, Missouri that same year, the Charleston church shooting in 2015, the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando in 2016, the shooting in Las Vegas in 2017 and Hurricane Florence in 2018.

However, he got racist slurs in his death threats in 2017, and he reported the issue to the police. Lemon began his show by saying, “This is CNN,” in a widely-reported episode that aired in January of the next year (2018). I’m Don Lemon, and tonight’s topic is “The President of the United States is racist.”

Lemon has been a target of President Trump and white nationalists because to his vocal criticism of the Trump administration and claims of racism against the president.
