On February 20, 1939, Herb Kohler was born in Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. When he passed away, he was 83. Frederick DeYoung, his grandfather, was a politician and judge in the United States who served on the Cook County Superior Court and the Illinois Supreme Court.

He attended Choate School from 1957 to 1957, serving as board chair from 2005 to 2010. He joined the organization after receiving his degree in industrial management from Yale University in 1965. At the age of 33, he was chosen as the board’s chairman and CEO in June 1972.
